2017/2018 Premier League preview

The new Premier League season is just a few weeks away, opening with Arsenal against 2015/16 winners Leicester City on Friday 11th August, the first time the Premier League has started on a Friday evening. So who are the frontrunners for the title?

The Big Six

Chelsea were the favourites for the title last season and Antonio Conte’s men delivered, holding the top spot almost from the first whistle. The early-season absence of injured playmaker Eden Hazard will hurt them, assuming the influential Belgian is still with the Blues come the start of the season.

Tottenham finished last season in some style, plundering 13 goals in their final two games as they once again finished just short in their bid for the title. Irresistible at times, they are sure to be in the battle once more.

Manchester City had a soft underbelly at times in 2016/17, conceding sloppy goals at vital moments, so Pep Guardiola will be looking to tighten up to sustain a strong title challenge. Liverpool were another side whose entertainment value was high but couldn’t secure the points on a regular enough basis. Jurgen Klopp will again be looking to Philippe Coutinho to provide his side’s impetus in their title quest.

Arsenal and Manchester United are the big spenders of the summer so far. United’s purchase of Romelu Lukaku and the Gunner’s capture of Alexandre Lacazette were for record fees and the two clubs will be hoping to improve on their disappointing league form of last season.

Any surprises in store?

Everton always seem just short of a genuine challenge for a top four spot, and they will hope to elevate from ‘best of the rest’ status with Wayne Rooney now back at his spiritual home.

In the meantime, how much longer can Bournemouth’s fairytale story continue? One of the most entertaining side’s in the league, can they shock their way into European contention under Eddie Howe?
