Wimbledon 2017: all you need to know

The venue is the All England Lawn Tennis Club in the capital’s leafy SW17; the dates – the 3rd to 16th of July. Yes, it’s the Wimbledon Championships, one of the sporting highlights of the British summer and a blue-ribbon event watched by millions here and around the globe. Reigning men’s singles champion and world number one, Andy Murray, will be defending his title and despite his recent slump in form (crashing out in the first round of the Queen’s tournament and losing nine times already this year) a patriotic Wimbledon crowd will no doubt be roaring their support for the home player.

If Murray does triumph, he’ll be the first British man to win the tournament three times since the legendary Fred Perry back in the 1930s. Johanna Konta will be the top ranked UK player in the women’s singles. If she manages to go all the way to the final, she’ll be the first Brit to do so since Virginia Wade won the event in 1977.

The magic of Wimbledon

The green grass courts, the players’ all-white dress code, strawberries (140,000 servings sold last year), and the loud and appreciative crowd are all part of the magic of Wimbledon, not to mention the spectacle of all the world’s best players striving to win one of sport’s most prestigious prizes. Total prize money for this year’s championship amounts to £31,600,000. Meanwhile, some 250 ball boys and girls will help to keep the matches flowing, during which more than 54,000 balls will be used. And while that sounds like a lot of strawberries, last year over 320,000 glasses of Pimms were sold!
